We seem to be entering a cyclical motion. Around the time of the WW2, there was no such thing as pesticides or chemicals for farming, everything was organic, yes, it was covered in dirt and a lot of vegetables grew in strange shapes but when rationing was introduced, nobody cared what shape their carrot looked like, they were very happy to get one, no matter what it looked like.
It is so sad, that currently, thousands of tons of good food is sent for animal feed or ploughed into the land because it is considered to be the wrong shape or too small under EU rules. I understand Sainsbury's was forced to ditch a healthy eating campaign at the last minute after they discovered their staff could be prosecuted under the existing EU regulations. It’s crazy especially at a time of high food prices. It is just irresponsible!
